An opportunity

The VNHP emphasises the importance of early presentation into the program and we encourage nurses with potential or actual problems to refer themselves to our service.

The reality is, however, that some will be “assisted self-referrals” – that is, they will come to us voluntarily, but on the advice or encouragement of a professional colleague or manager. In some cases recommendations will be made by the Nurses Board of Victoria.

The VNHP conducts assessments, develops individual management plans and coordinates treatment, including the arrangement of appropriate referrals. We supervise aftercare and follow up and when required, support the participant's re-entry to work.

The management of these issues may require a range of therapeutic interventions and the appropriate expert assistance will be obtained in each individual case.

Advice and referral will also be provided to family members and where appropriate, work colleagues (if this support relates to a specific participant, the participants consent is required).

The program will assist in the development of a supportive social network, which may involve existing support groups in the general community or the opportunity to join the VNHP support groups if appropriate. These groups address participant's issues and provide them with peer support to meet the challenges of managing their health and careers.

We also provide advice and support to managers and HR staff seeking assistance to support nurses and develop processes to address these health concerns in the workplace.

The Program

The Victorian Nurses Health Program has been established to ensure that a
full time professional service is available to address the needs of nurses and students of nursing experiencing substance use and mental health issues.

The program was an initiative of the Nurses Board of Victoria, the Australian Nurses Federation and interested individual nurses and today enjoys broad support from many areas within the nursing profession.

Although the program is funded through the Nurses Board of Victoria it is a fully independent legal entity with a five member Board of Directors.

The program provides a service to all nurses and students of nursing in Victoria and advice and support to managers and HR staff facing the challenge of managing these issues in the workplace. View our Vision and Mission

The Challenge

The practice of nursing offers no protection from illness, including alcohol and other drug (AOD) and mental health problems.

The community can be sensitive towards these types of health problems among nurses and there is often reluctance by the nurse to admit to these kinds of issues. Nurses also inform us that they can be uncomfortable in the role of health service user and these factors can contribute to late presentation for treatment or worse still, no presentation for treatment at all.

The VNHP wishes to meet the challenge of encouraging nurses to come forward to receive help and is willing to receive anonymous calls, attend workplaces to inform staff about the program and work with managers and HR to develop supportive practices for handling these sensitive health issues.
